In the initial stage of painting use watercolor paint.
After you have finished painting the entire composition then add highlights using high quality acrylic paint (i.e. Golden Acrylics, Basics Acrylics).
This way you will achieve both: beautiful wash and paint bleeding effect with the use of water color as well as brightness and high contrast by adding acrylic paint
